35mm, baybeh!

Wed Jul 1, 2009, 5:30 PM
Yep, this week I've just started using me da's old Praktica MTL5 SLR. And I'm using film! Film!
I realised that instead of complaining that I can't afford a DSLR, I might as well learn how to use one first. And what better way to force yourself to think about every shot than using film?

Also, I now have more lenses at my disposal than I know what to do with! I love the 200mm zoom lens for taking shots of those tricksy animals which are too fast for my compact to focus on! Did I mention there's no auto-focus either? Also good for learning.

I've used about 15 shots now in about 3 days and I'm loving the precise control I have over depth of field, shutter speed, everything! It's great fun!

  • Mood: Pirate
  • Eating: nothing...I'm hungry now...I'm off to eat.
  • Drinking: That's it, I'm going to make tea!

Good move, you'll certainly learn a whole lot more about photography with that set up than you would with a brand new dSLR. The only problem is that you end up spending so much on film and processing that you never get to save up for a digital.
If you've got your hands on a super-wide angle or fish eye, I'd recommend sticking a roll of black and white, 200 ISO film in and going for a walk through an industrial area on a dark, cloudy day. Also, since its summer there, you might want a UV filter. For more fun, try some Kodak HID film. It captures near visible infra-red (NVIR) so you get some crazy effects on foliage. Take a roll of this stuff to a field or forest and see watch you turn out. Sadly, my 35mm counts the film with an infra-red light gate so HID film would be a waste of time.

Cheers man! Thanks for the advice!
I'll definitely invest in a UV filter. I have a UV polariser but it doesn't fit the wide or zoom lens! Only the standard lens. :(

I just finished the roll today as well so I'll get it developed tomorrow! Can't wait!
Was out today after I got home from work at 4 in the morning. As there was a power cut in my area I could get some great shots of the sky as the sun was coming up without the streetlights getting in the way!

Was wondering what the neighbours would have thought of a guy walking about during a powercut, dressed in dark clothing and carrying a camera and tripod! heh!

All the best!

Either:

"ARGH!! TERRORIST!!"

or

"Fucking artists. I wish I had a valid reason to wander 'round outside at this time of night..."
